We are seeking qualified individuals to join our Kayaking Guide staff. Guiding positions range from multiple tours each week to occasional tours that fit into your flexible schedule to devote to your passion for paddling and sharing the beauty of the outdoors. All of our public tours require local natural history knowledge. In addition to our public tours, we offer customized private tours, teambuilding tours, and environmental education tours for school groups, scout troops, corporate groups, and other private groups. Experience in these areas is a plus.
Guides are needed for our high season, which runs May-September. Dependent on schedule and desire, guides work 1-8 tours per week, sometimes two per day if desired. Guides living in the area year round are able to work year round, though on a less frequent basis.
Our normal hiring season is February through April each year. At times, more staff are added outside this timeframe. We accept applications year round.
Hours: Occasional/Part time/Full Time
Positions Available: Lead and Assistant Sea Kayak Guide
Qualifications:
- Current Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder, and Adult & Child CPR
- Flexible schedule and/or midweek availability
- Basic knowledge of natural history ( wildlife, marine mammals, raptors, waterfowl, geology, marine environment, tidepools, wetlands)
- Experience leading groups, preferably in an outdoor setting
- Knowledge of local cultural history, natural history, and conservation issues of each day tour and/or expedition locale.
- Training and experience in sea kayaking, rescues and navigation. Should be able to:
- Properly fit and adjust the kayak for effective control and comfort
- Demonstrate proper use and control of the paddle, performing basic strokes and maneuvers efficiently
- Safely enter and exit the kayak from shore
- Safely and effectively wet exit & reenter the kayak in open water
- Perform t-rescues and paddle float rescues efficiently and effectively
- Identify marine hazards and safety concerns and present strategies for dealing with them
- Demonstrate an understanding of the basic Rules of the Nautical Road
- Understand personal and group limitations and skill levels
- Know when it is safe and appropriate to paddle
- Experience teaching rescues & paddling techniques and leading commercial kayak tours.
- Excellent outdoor leadership, group management, and people skills.
- Able to be flexible, well organized and pay attention to all details while keeping the larger picture in focus.
- Lead kayak guides must have a CA drivers license and be able to tow a kayak trailer.
- Familiar with local waterways, tides, currents, weather patterns

Hiking Guide/Naturalist
We are seeking qualified individuals to join our hiking and education staff. This position is on an as needed basis and is perfect for individuals with flexible schedules and occasional extra time to devote to their passion for the outdoors, education, and exploration. Our guided hikes are for all ages. Our environmental education programs are for kids 6 and up. Most of our hiking guides average 4-6 trips per year. As a guide, you may be called up to 4 times a month to lead hikes typically midweek and occasionally on weekends.

- Experience teaching science concepts
- Experience leading groups in an outdoor setting
- Experience developing lesson plans is a plus.

- Able to be flexible, well organized and pay attention to all details while keeping the larger picture in focus.
- Lead hiking guides must have a CA drivers license.
- Familiar with local trail conditions, tides, and weather patterns.
