GPS Navigation
Learn about the tools
of navigation in this course designed for the serious
outdoor enthusiast. We will study how to calculate
bearings, plot a course, triangulate, and many other
components of standard navigation. We will briefly
explore the effects of tides and currents, as well
as weather patterns as you plot your course to the
other side of Tomales Bay.
GPS technology has
progressed so that affordable, waterproof, handheld
units are available as a common tool in the wilderness.
Adventurous boaters, skiers, and hikers appreciate
the added safety and fun in knowing where they are
headed in the backcountry, in inclement weather
conditions, or at night.
In this class, we will
investigate various GPS features and menu options.
We will learn how to mark waypoints and follow plotted
courses with hands-on practice during a night-time
paddle on Tomales Bay.
Our professional and
experienced instructors will provide you with one-on-one
guidance, as they introduce you to navigation and
GPS.
*Bring your
GPS, deck compass and/or orienteering compass. We
do have a few GPSs to share if needed
