Charts & Compass

Deck compass

Have you ever wanted to take an extended trip in a kayak? Like British Columbia? Alaska? Mexico? Ever wanted to be able to paddle in foggy conditions? Or at night? Then consider signing up for a navigation course!

Our introductory course is 4 hours long done half  in the day and half at night! Old school mariners used sextants and modern day adventurers use GPS. Although, we`ll discuss the merits of these tools and learn abit about the history of navigation, we will focus almost entirely on using a $25.00 orienteering compass, a $20.00 chart, and knowledge to empower  us.

It`s a great feeling to paddle through the fog or night and hit a bullseye in your destination!   You will learn all the parts of a compass, basic reading of a chart, how to calculate bearings, plot a course and follow it, triangulating, ranging, and many other components of navigating!  It`s a power-packed class in a small intimate format.

Time: Times vary depending on time of year. for more information.

Price: $75 per person

Launch Site: Mililer County Park, aka Nick's Cove (See Directions for details).

Dates: See Calendar or call for dates

Compass & Chart Navigation

Learn about the tools of navigation in this course designed for the serious outdoor enthusiast. We will study how to calculate bearings, plot a course, triangulate, and many other components of standard navigation using compass and charts.

We will briefly explore the effects of tides and currents, as well as weather patterns as you plot your course to the other side of Tomales Bay.

Adventurous boaters, skiers, and hikers appreciate the added safety and fun in knowing where they are headed in the backcountry, in inclement weather conditions, or at night. In this class, you will learn how to follow plotted courses with hands-on practice during a night-time paddle on Tomales Bay.
